Akshara Jana vidya kendram is a nongovernmental organization working for the empowerment of the rural masses through a wide range if initiatives . the name of the organisation reflects the purpose of its formation :as a people”s education centre. It was constituted , drawing from the spirit of the literacy campaign of the 1980s. Akshara janavidya kendram was the dream project of their self motivation and dedication.

Akshara jana vidya kendram was registered in 1994 under the Travencore Cochin scientific and charitable societies Act of 1995. It is housed at Tholikkode in Thiruvanathapuram district . the area of operation is centered in Vithura, Nanniyode and tholikkode grama panchayaths. These are among the underdeveloped regions in thiruvanthapuram District , with highland and forest areas. This tropical regions has a wide range of rare species of flora and fauna.
The livelihood of the people in these areas consist mostly of agriculture, cattle and poultry farming etc.The district’s tribal settlements are concentrated in various parts of these panchayaths and the tribal people are poor and marginalized.

At the initial stages if its operation , the akshara jana vidya kendram focused on awareness generation and literacy . later a series of initiatives were launched with broad perspective to bring out rural social development in the target area.Currently the programme and activities of Akshara jana vidya kendram extent to the whole of thiruvanathapuram district.
